Romans 8 Prayer Service
A special gathering of Heritage Church to read, pray, and sing over one of Scripture's most beloved chapters — Romans 8. A time of joy, celebration, healing, and restoration as we consider the truth of the Gospel and its implications for our lives today.
Opening Prayer
Father God, we come to you expectantly knowing that you are at work in our midst even now. As we open your word, may you open our eyes to the glory of the gospel of your Son and the implications for our lives now and forevermore.
Holy Spirit, we confess that we are weak and easily distracted — help us to see Jesus, open our hearts and minds to the word of God, that you may have your way in us. In the name of our glorious Savior and King, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Romans 8:1–17
No Condemnation — Walking in the Spirit
The Great Declaration
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
God did what the law could not do — by sending His own Son, He condemned sin in the flesh so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us.
Flesh vs. Spirit
To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. We are not debtors to the flesh. If by the Spirit we put to death the deeds of the body, we will live.
All who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God — not a spirit of slavery and fear, but a spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, "Abba, Father."
Romans 8:18–27
Groaning, Hope & the Spirit's Intercession
Creation's Longing
Creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God, groaning together in the pains of childbirth — longing to be set free from bondage to corruption.
Our Hope
We ourselves groan inwardly, waiting for adoption as sons — the redemption of our bodies. "In this hope we were saved." We wait for what we do not yet see, with patience.
The Spirit Intercedes
The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words, according to the will of God.
Romans 8:28–39
The Golden Chain & Unbreakable Love
For those who love God, all things work together for good for those called according to His purpose. This chain of salvation — foreknown, predestined, called, justified, glorified — is God's unbreakable promise to His children.
"If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all — how will he not with him also give us graciously all things?"
Prayer of Confession & No Condemnation
Paul's cry in Romans 7:24 — "Wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death?" — is our own. We confess our sins, our wayward affections, the evil we keep doing against our will. Yet the answer resounds: Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All condemnation rightfully ours has been poured out upon Jesus. In exchange, we receive His righteousness and all the inheritance earned by His righteous life. We stand not only uncondemned — we stand as righteous sons, adopted and loved by the Father eternally.
Prayer: Shame, Flesh & True Righteousness
Freedom from Shame
Shame comes from sin, and our instinct is to hide and cover. But even in the Garden, God drew Adam and Eve out and covered them — a first sacrifice prefiguring Christ, who has covered us with His perfection now and forevermore.
Lord, open the eyes of those who wrestle with shame, that they may see the unnaturalness of living in shame once covered and set free by Jesus Christ.
Repenting of Self-Righteousness
It is always tempting to carry our own righteousness into our relationship with Jesus. But our righteousness is insufficient. Christ's righteousness — His sacrifice and resurrection — is fully and completely sufficient.
The Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in us and gives life to our mortal bodies. Amazing love.
Prayer: Adoption, Fear & the Children of God
Called His Children
We confess we are sometimes disobedient, selfish children walking according to the flesh. Yet you are a God who forgives — your mercy endures forever. Help us to be led by your Spirit day by day.
Not a Spirit of Fear
We have not received a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. We can cast all our cares upon you because you care for us. Those living in fear, dejection, loneliness, or despair — we are adopted. We can call you Abba. Father. Papa.
Heirs with Christ
If children, then heirs — fellow heirs with Christ. Help us to remember the hope of our calling, the promise of the resurrection, and to live in the Spirit you have already given us, claiming freedom from the law of sin and death.
More Than Conquerors
"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loves us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all of creation is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
There is no trial, persecution, government, conspiracy, past sin, future failure, cancer diagnosis, marital strife, financial hardship, or earthly destruction that can hinder the love of God. We may feel the effects of sin in our flesh — the battle may rage — but we are more than conquerors in Christ. He is alive, seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us. His love eclipses the night.
Closing Prayer
Faithful Until the Day of Glory
Our Foundation
Father, you alone are the author of life and salvation. It was your good pleasure to crush your Son so that we may declare: there is no condemnation for those in Christ.
Our Inheritance
You have given us your very self — access to your throne, secured for all eternity. Pain may come, our bodies may fail, yet we are not conquered, for we belong to the author of life.
Our Longing
We long for your return, when faith will be made sight and the final victory over sin and death will occur. Till then, help us to be faithful — our spirit is willing, but our flesh is weak.
